Seriously. Was just reading this article over on Expedition Portal about the trucks of Iceland and I am in love.
I mean seriously, a six wheeled E-series on 40 somethings?
Thats a 46" tire on a 16" wheel...
Absolutely incredible. An overland lovers dream. You can read the full story and view more pictures !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I found this picture of a UAZ 452 online a while back, in a field in Iceland, abandoned.

Taxes I'd guess. And possibly the remote location.

I have the card of one of the places that rent the Defenders at an overland expo. I think it's something like $250 a day with unlimited mileage and you can easily drive around the entire island in about a week. My dad and I want to do it, it would be amazing.

Haha yeah I used to work for a company and they would send us to Europe via Iceland once every year. Like $8/pint last I went. GORGEOUS country. Have some friends that live there. You have to try some Hakarl with Brennevin once in your life. Might as well do it there...

I've been so I'll have to decline your kind offer.
I didn't actually see many of the vehicles you mention though. Apart from anything else it's illegal to drive off road in Iceland, although they do use the term road quite widely.
I saw this though. Interestingly it's on Street View for Akureyri.

It sounds awesome and I have always thought about retiring there as so much of the land mass is untouched by civilization. Also, I would prefer to go out in an instance of fire and ash from an erupting volcano rather than a prolonged wheelchair bound stint in some retirement home in Florida...

Technically, in many parts of America it is illegal to drive off road as well, where "off road" means off the given trail area. I know out here, BLM can slap you with upwards of $1500 fine for leaving the permitted trail area. But as always, it's not illegal unless you get caught...

Very true, what's also very true is that a Defender can comfortably fit 4 adult males so the price evens out a bit.

Yea I would love to put aside 20 grand or so and take a month long overlanding trip through the country side. Drive the Jeep up into Newfounland and then load it up into a boat for a few day boat ride, 3 ish weeks traveling the country side them boat it back to Merikah.

See the thing is, when you're traversing dormant volcano's and glacier territory, these actually serve a purpose. And as you can see, yes the tires are big, but they don't have some stupid 18" lift kit.

I know that and these are proper off road machines, but most brodozer owners say that they take their trucks off road when they don't.

I was there over the summer! I would highly recommend going out there, as it was one of my favorite trips! The cars are pretty sweet too...
One day we went off-roading in an extended cab explorer, that was epic!

Yea I've been to black sand beaches before down in Dominica. Beautiful but just wear shoes as the volcanic rock that makes it black is still sharp.
